The first manned space flight in the world was carried out from Baikonur on April 12, 1961.

The cosmodrome Baikonur is a secured zone and the issuance of permits is required. The entrance and exit to or from the spaceport and the city should be made from controlled-pass posts with an allowance card. Documents are submitted 30 days in advance for the access and stay in the city and cosmodrome. To obtain a permit, foreign citizens must have a Kazakhstan visa.
