The Great Silk Road is one of the most significant achievements in the history of world civilization. The extensive networks of caravan roads have crossed Europe and Asia from the Mediterranean to China and served, in the ancient and medieval times, as an important tool not only for trade, but also as a cultural and economic bridge between East and West. The Silk Road had a huge impact on the formation of the political, economical and cultural system of the countries through which it passed. Along all its routes there appeared large and small trade cities and settlements.
The main route of the Great Silk Road on the territory of Kazakhstan passed through the southern part of the country, from the border of China trade caravans moved through the cities of Sairam, Yassy, Otrar, Taraz and further to the Central Asia, Persia, the Caucasus and from there to the Europe. All these cities owe their appearance to the merchants, who, crossing the steppes of Kazakhstan, arranged the stops, which transformed into the caravanserais, and these in their turn - into the settlements, which eventually expanded into cities.
